Data analytics is reshaping healthcare. When applied effectively and ethically, it enables healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers to uncover patterns, predict outcomes, and make more informed decisions — ultimately improving patient care, operational efficiency, and system-wide innovation. With systems used daily by more 10,000 healthcare organisations, our software is the #1 or #2 choice across all major healthcare markets in the UK. Various point-of-care systems from across our network seamlessly stream information into our vast data platform, EMIS-X Analytics. Unlocking insights for life sciences
With our Explorer solution, we can enable researchers and life sciences teams to query, explore and analyse near real-time, longitudinal data at speed to derive market insights, generate evidence and optimise healthcare delivery. Depending upon the relationship the researcher has with our solution users, Explorer can enables the processing of primary care, community, children’s and mental health datasets and can provide transactional access to community pharmacy dispensing dataset queries. With decades of experience safely managing clinical data, we support UK GDPR compliant, secure data analysis and complex queries at speed and scale. Our Access Guard technology safeguards sensitive information, by ensuring that only those with the appropriate permissions from the data controller can access specific data.

Data controllership Our customers are the data controllers of the information held in Optum systems and solutions. Before any of this data can be shared through Explorer with research or life sciences organisations: (i) there must be an appropriate contract or data processing agreement in place directly between the data controller and the research or life sciences organisation, governing the basis upon which the latter is accessing/processing the data. This is a direct relationship between those parties, that does not involve Optum. (ii) the data controller must instruct Optum to share the data with the relevant organisation (which we will capture in our solution).
Three key principles for EMIS-X Analytics:
Establish appropriate data sharing as the standard.
Build and maintain strong technical, legal, and regulatory foundations to support responsible data use.
Advance the use of data, with appropriate permissions, to drive informed decision making in healthcare organisations.

With appropriate data sharing agreements in place, customers can confidently access and leverage insights from Explorer that advance research and innovation in life sciences: Enabling strategic insights for life sciences teams
