Introducing EMIS The role of the community pharmacist is rapidly evolving as more pharmacies expand their service provision beyond traditional dispensing and move towards a service led business model. But with restricted budgets, time constraints and considerable pressure already placed on the sector, it’s now more important than ever that pharmacies have the right technology in place to deliver these additional services. With over two decades of experience, our technology has helped over 5,800 pharmacies deliver operational success, helping to improve patient outcomes across the UK. This document aims to give you a better understanding of how our solutions work together to improve workflow and efficiency to support your business as the community pharmacist’s role diversifies.

The Pharmacy First Initiative The challenges facing the NHS Primary care is under considerable pressure as it continues to manage a growing demand for patient care. In a bid to solve this issue and help build capacity across healthcare services. NHS England proposed a Pharmacy First scheme, in line with the Primary Care Access Recovery Plan (PCARP), to redirect workloads away from primary care teams into community pharmacy. Overview From 31st January 2024, the Pharmacy First scheme will offer patients direct access to essential healthcare services through their local pharmacy. The Pharmacy First scheme will now include urgent repeat medication supply and referrals for minor illnesses, which previously fell under the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS).

6

In addition to this, under this new scheme, pharmacists will also be able to provide medical advice and issue medications for seven common health conditions without the need for a GP referral: • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections • Shingles • Sore throat • Impetigo • Infected insect bites • Sinusitis • Acute Otitis Media

How technology can help If you decide to opt-in to the Pharmacy First scheme, it’s important to consider how your pharmacy’s IT solutions will help your business deliver these additional services.
